What is an SBLC? A plain-English guide for commodity buyers and sellers
SBLC stands for Standby Letter of Credit. It is a written promise from a bank that it will pay a named beneficiary if its client fails to pay or perform under a contract. If everything goes well, the SBLC is never used. It "stands by" as a safety net.
How an SBLC works in a commodity deal
- A buyer agrees to buy, say, 25,000 MT of ICUMSA 45 sugar.
- The seller wants protection in case the buyer doesn't pay.
- The buyer asks its own bank to issue an SBLC in the seller's favour.
- The bank sends the SBLC bank-to-bank to the seller's bank, normally by an authenticated SWIFT message (MT760).
- The seller ships. If the buyer pays normally, the SBLC simply expires. If the buyer defaults, the seller presents the documents the SBLC requires and claims payment from the bank.
The rules behind it
SBLCs are usually issued under ISP98 (International Standby Practices) or UCP 600 (the ICC rules for documentary credits). A real SBLC states which rules apply.
There are no such things as "ICC 600 regulations" or "UCP 700". Seeing either is a red flag.
SBLC vs Letter of Credit (LC)
| Letter of Credit (LC) | Standby LC (SBLC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | The normal way to pay | A backup if the buyer fails to pay |
| Used when | Every shipment | Only if something goes wrong |
| Typical message | MT700 | MT760 |
Red flags: when an "SBLC" is not what it seems
- It arrives as a PDF or email, not bank-to-bank through your own bank.
- The issuing bank is unknown, or isn't rated.
- The beneficiary named in it is not your company.
- Someone asks you to pay a fee to "receive", "lease" or "monetise" it.
- The wording mentions "ICC 600 regulations", "UCP 700" or "Prove and Move".
- It comes from a "provider" with no link to the actual buyer.
How to check an SBLC properly
- Ask your own bank to authenticate it through SWIFT, bank-to-bank. Never rely on a phone number or email given by the other side.
- Check that the issuing bank is real and rated, and that the applicant is your actual buyer.
- Check the wording: applicable rules, expiry date, amount, and the documents required for a claim.
- Run the offer and documents through a free Vanguard Verify check to catch scam wording and reused documents.
FAQ
What is the full form of SBLC? Standby Letter of Credit.
Is an SBLC the same as a bank guarantee? They do a similar job (the bank pays if its client defaults), but they follow different rules. An SBLC usually follows ISP98 or UCP 600; a bank guarantee usually follows URDG 758 or local law.
Can I check an SBLC online? You can check the offer and documents for red flags online. Only your own bank can confirm that a SWIFT SBLC is genuine.
Does the seller or the buyer provide the SBLC? In a purchase, the buyer's bank issues it in favour of the seller. The seller provides proof of product, not proof of funds.
